Protect exposed piping before the freeze
Insulate vulnerable outdoor and garage piping, disconnect hoses, protect exterior faucets where appropriate, and follow manufacturer instructions for irrigation and specialty equipment.
Keep conditioned air where plumbing needs it
Open sink cabinets on exterior walls when necessary and maintain indoor heat. Do not use open flames to thaw pipes.
If a faucet stops flowing
A frozen section may be present. Keep the faucet open slightly and warm the area gradually if it is safe and accessible. Watch closely for leaks as the pipe thaws.
Know the main shutoff
The greatest damage can occur after a split pipe thaws. Knowing how to shut off the water quickly is one of the best freeze-preparation steps.
When to call for help
If water is actively damaging the property, sewage is entering the home, a water heater is leaking uncontrollably, or you cannot isolate a major leak, call for service. For gas odor, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.
For non-urgent work, describe the symptom, property type and Richardson ZIP code so the service provider can plan the right diagnostic tools and parts.
